The Great Chase, Part #36: Fulfillment!

❖ Version History ❖

1st of April – 17th of May, 2022
By This point in the tale of The Great Chase… so many things have happened to bring the game to life. In the last few months, we have coordinated items from all over the world to arrive in the same place at the same time:

❖ The game was produced as a series of 1,000 units in Hong Kong.

❖ The custom promotional cards were produced in Wisconsin.

❖ The custom player cards were made in Washington State.

❖ And our Custom Made Tin Case was produced in Florida.

Without a doubt, the most challenging aspect of this phase in game development is the idea that there are multiple versions of the game that feature different pieces and elements. To better understand where this becomes tricky, first remember the composition of the two different versions of the game:

❖ The Basic Edition ❖
The basic edition of The Great Chase is the main version of the game which has been designed for the retail marketplace. It features:

❖ 12 Map Cards || Tarot Sized ❖
❖ 52 Flight Cards || 2.5″ Square ❖
❖ 40 Mission Cards || Poker Sized ❖
❖ 6 Character Cards || Poker Sized ❖
❖ 6 dice || 12mm ❖
❖ 6 Player Avatar Pieces ❖
❖ 16 Page Rule Book ❖
❖ 1 Cardboard Box to fit it all in ❖

❖ The Deluxe Edition ❖
The deluxe version of The Great Chase was made as a Kickstarter Exclusive reward for patrons who wanted a higher quality game for a higher price. It was meant to give the investors something more personal and special for being involved in the original funding of the product as an idea, while netting them a collectible item as a reward. The composition of the game features the same elements, with many upgraded parts:

❖ 12 Map Cards || Tarot Sized ❖
❖ 52 Flight Cards || 2.5″ Square ❖
❖ 40 Mission Cards || Poker Sized ❖
❖ 6 Character Cards || Poker Sized ❖
❖ 6 dice || 12mm ❖
❖ 6 Custom Airplane Pieces ❖
❖ 16 Page Rule Book ❖
❖ 1 Large ‘Great Chase’ Felt Bag ❖
❖ 1 Sturdy Metal Box to fit it all in ❖

Now, when it comes to production, there are some very tricky problems to solve in order to get this all to work:

❖ Firstly, the manufacturing facility needs to understand that there are two different iterations to the game (one that comes in the cardboard box, and one that is going to have most of the same base components, as well as a few unique items, but be built into a felt bag rather than cardboard so it can then later be added to a metal container).

❖ Additionally, both versions created at the manufacturing facility must be shipped to our distribution center, where there will be more people with instructions to fulfill. These people must understand the difference between the basic and deluxe edition, and it is at this location that everything will be arriving from all over the world for final packaging and shipment. So, not only do the people here need to understand that there are two versions of the game, but they will literally be placing the felt bag version of the game into the metal containers and handling the shipping from there.

❖To make things even more messy, the poor souls over at the distribution center have also been sent the custom player cards (which there are only 8 of that must be added to very specific packages within the lot), as well as 1,000 sets of the promo-card package containing the secret map cards, which must be sent with every version of the game that is shipped from that location from here forward.

Besides all the specific instruction for final packaging, it took about thirty-five days to actually get all of these individual parts to the distribution center from the four different places these items arrived from.

But…

After the 9 months of production chaos, and one more entire month of dealing with international and domestic shipping (through various hoops of covid outbreaks and other potential disaster), all of the puzzle pieces have finally united, and in a moment of great elation and victory, today our first retail allotment of the games arrived in the mail:

One (mostly) full case of The Great Chase, with a pack of promo cards in white

It is almost hard to believe seeing it with my own eyes after what it took to get here.

The sensations of joy and relief at finally holding a product in your hand after the two years battle it took to concoct the idea, crowdfund it, produce it, and ship it here is somewhat indescribable. The best metaphor I can give you is that it feels as if you have finally reached the top of the mountain, knowing all along that there is yet another mountain upon the top here that must still be hiked. It feels like great success, but there is so much more work yet to come in continuing to strive forward. From here, the journey of The Great Chase begins its quest into the world of the marketplace, and the retail environment.

Till there are any more major developments, this is the end of the line for the Design Journal on The Great Chase narrative. Perhaps we will return to the discussion of design as potential new product releases, but for now its time to get this game into the world for you to truly hold and see for yourself!

Thank you for reading along on this journey.
I cannot wait for your feedback on the game!
